Teaching of Writing in Primary ESL Classroom: A Critical Essay

This is my critical essay for my microteaching. Just thought of sharing it here. Lots of grammar errors but just ignore it. Do feel free to leave a comment, ya.

The target learners that I have chosen are Year 4 with intermediate proficiency level. The topic of the lesson is Unit 14, Harmony in the Jungle under the theme of World of Knowledge. The authentic teaching material that I have picked is an article from National Geographic website entitled Giant Panda (Appendix 1) which later will be used to develop writing skills. I will now elaborate more on the factors of material selection, criteria for material evaluation and lastly, the principles of material adaptation.

First and foremost, the main factor for the selection of the article is because of its authenticity. Wallace (1992) defines authentic texts as real-life texts, not written for pedagogic purposes. The article that I have selected is not written for any educational purposes instead it is written for the promotion of environmental conservation. The article is written for native speakers and brings learners to the usage of the language in real life. This will allow learners to interact with the real language and content rather than the form. Hence, this is the main reason why I have chosen this article.

Next, Nuttall (1996) gives three main criteria when choosing texts to be used in the classroom which are suitability of content, exploitability and readability. In my context which is the article Giant Panda, I am going to look at it through the view of suitability of content. According to Carrell (1984), teachers should use materials that pupils are interested in. Pupil’s interest on the text is important because it drives pupil’s motivation to learn. Besides that, this article is also relevant to the pupil’s need. It is known to public that Malaysia has adopted 2 giant pandas from China on May 21 to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic ties between the 2 countries. Since giant panda is not a local animal, this article will fulfil the pupil’s need in knowing the creature. Thus, the content of the article Giant Panda is suitable for the pupil’s interest and need.

Moving on, I will expound on the criteria for material evaluation. Tomlinson (1998) suggests that good text should attract the pupil’s curiousity and interest. In other words, the material should be compelling that it holds the pupil’s attention. The article Giant Panda is an interesting article because giant panda is not very familiar to Malaysian and so the pupils will want to get to know more about the animal. Other than that, Tomlinson (1998) also proposes that illustrations should all look friendly to the students so that they feel relaxed when seeing them. In the article, a picture of a cute giant panda eating bamboo shoots is included as well as a map of the giant pandas’ habitat. These pictures can be used to enhance pupil’s understanding of the article as well as attracting them. Hence, this is the first criterion of my material evaluation.

Besides that, the other criterion that I have used in evaluating the material is the objectives of the article. Cunningsworth (1995) writes that the aims of the materials should match closely with the aims of the teacher’s lesson objectives and with the needs of the learners. I would like to teach the pupils how to write numbers in word form and in the article Giant Panda, there is a lot of numbers appear throughout the paragraphs and because of that, this article suits the aim of my lesson. This is also in correspondence of the Dokumen Standard for Year 4, referring to Learning Standard 3.1.2, pupils should be able to write in neat cursive writing with correct spelling: c) numerals in word form. Furthermore, by using this text, I can teach the pupils how to write expository writing. Since this text is full with facts and information of giant pandas, it can be a good writing model for the pupils. Therefore, the text can be used to achieve the objective of my lesson.

Lastly, I will touch on the principles of material adaptation. I have made several adaptations that I consider necessary. First of all, I have made deletion to the length of the content. Since the original text is 300 words long, I have to reduce it to 150 words because that is the suitable quantity of words for Year 4 pupils.  The reason is to ensure that the pupils will not feel intimidated with the long paragraphs. This is because according to Mok (2008) creating an environment that is conducive can encourage learning. Furthermore, I also have made some simplification to the sentence structure. For example, I have simplified these two sentences “Wild pandas live only in remote, mountainous regions in central China. These high bamboo forests are cool and wet—just as pandas like it” to “Wild pandas live only in remote and cool mountainous regions in central China”. I have simplified these sentences by shortening and combining them to create a more simple sentence. Moreover, I also have applied addition to the text. I have added pictures to the article to make it more interesting and compelling. The pictures that I have used also acted up as an aid to the pupils to comprehend the text. Thus, these are the adaptations that I have made to the article Giant Panda so that it can suit the pupil’s need.

In conclusion, I have pointed out two factors of my material selection that are the authenticity and the suitability of content. Besides that, I also have used 2 criteria for material evaluation to evaluate my selected text and lastly, I have learnt how to adapt an authentic text that can be used in the primary ESL classroom

Example of my reflection/critical essay for TSL Listening and Speaking

The strength that I have identified during the microteaching that I have conducted on the 11th of March 2014 is the good flow of the lesson. According to Farrel (2002), a good lesson has a sense of coherence and flow. In other words, an excellent teaching and learning process is one that hang together and related to each other rather than just a sequence of discrete activities. For instance, all the five stages in the teaching and learning activities my partner and I conducted are interrelated in such a way that the pupils are able to grasp the lesson. Besides that, I also ensured that the materials used are of the same topic rather than just chunks or gist of it. Thus, this is the strength that I have identified during my microteaching session.
However, the weakness that I have identified is that I am being too taut during the teaching and learning session. According to Borich (2000), a teacher who is excited about the subject being taught and shows it by facial expression is more likely to hold the attention of pupils than one who does not exhibit these behaviours. Since I am too stiff, the condition of the class is dull, hence, not a very good learning environment for the pupils. I am also lacking in my facial expressions which in return sending a negative message to the pupils. The pupils may be thinking that I am a grumpy teacher when actually I am not. Thus, in order to improve this, I need to be more cheerful and move around the class to make it livelier. I also have to fix my facial expressions so that I can lift up the mood of the class.
Moving on to the materials used, I have used Mr. Bean shopping scene for set induction, a dialogue from the British Council for while-listening stage and a song for closure. The reason I chose Mr. Bean shopping scene for my introduction is because I wanted to set the class with a happy and joyful environment. According to Ellis (2005), a good learning environment can improve pupils’ active participation and the effectiveness of teaching. Therefore, this is why I used the said video for my introduction. Next, I have chosen a dialogue about shopping from the British Council. Widdowson (1990) states the usage of authentic materials will give pupils the exposure to real language and its use in its own community. Hence, this is why I have picked the dialogue to be adapted for my lesson because I believed that the pupils should be exposed to the real English language. Other than that, I have opted for the song Let’s Go Shopping for closure is because I want to help the pupils to form a coherent picture of the lesson. Eken (1996), states that song can be used to practice a language. Hence, by using the song, I believed that the pupils will be able to comprehend the lesson better.
Finally, the High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) question used in the lesson. Newmann (1990) defined HOTS as thinking skills that include critical, logical, reflective, metacognitive, and creative thinking.  I have integrated the elements of High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in my lesson by posing a question that enables the pupils to express themselves creatively in simple language. According to Bruer (1993), fostering students’ higher order thinking skills is considered as an important educational goal. By giving the pupils HOTS question, I believed it can help to produce high-achieving pupils.  However, before I posed the question, I gave them a specific situation to help them constructing their answers later. The situation is that Mother’s Day is coming soon and based on a list given to the pupils, they have to choose a present within the given budget which is RM 50.00. Among the presents listed are perfume, cooking book, accessories, watch and a bouquet of flower. After choosing the present, the pupils have to give a reason to their selection. I divided them to a group of 4 so that they can learn to solve problem cooperatively. Then, they have to present their answer in front of the class. Through this activity, the pupils can develop their thinking skills by choosing an appropriate gift for their mother. They have to consider which gift suits the Mother’s Day theme and whether the gift is within their budget. So, aside from making a suitable choice, they need to a little calculation too. Hence, I have integrated a bit of Mathematics in my teaching and learning activities.
As a conclusion, I have identified strength and a weakness during my microteaching session. My strength during the teaching and learning activity is the good flow of the lesson which makes the pupils grasp the input better. On the other hand, I have also discovered my weakness; being too stiff and taut while teaching. In order to improve this, I need to change my behaviour by being more cheerful and I also need to have better facial expressions when I am teaching. Besides that, I have also justified the reasons for my selection of materials that I used in the teaching which is to make the lesson more enjoyable, to make the pupils participate more and also to aid the pupils in practicing the language. Last but not least, I also have incorporated HOTS question in my lesson in order to produce high-achieving pupils for nation.

A recap of 2013!!

It has been a few weeks since 2014 started and i just remembered that i havent list up my memories of 2013!! So here we go!

A/N: The list is all jumble up!

  1. I started my Degree in Teaching Of English As A Second Language or also known as TESL. A big congratulation to me because i thought i wouldnt make it. However, i passed the exam with a good result. (it's not that high but it still surpassed my expectation)
  2. I went to Singapore! My first ever "oversea" trip with my twin and without my parents!! Have a blast there! We went on the cruise from the floating bay, along the River Side Point and up to Robertson Quay. We got to see the famous Merlion Statue. We went to Esplanade by foot from the National Library. We went to the Safari Night and lastly, we went to Sentosa Island. Overall, it was a fun trip except for the forum.

  3. Yes, this year i conquered another water theme park, Sunway Lagoon!! I received a 20% discount coupon from MPH and 20% is a lot considering the entrance fee is so expensive. I've tried the vuvuzela, the Waterplexx 5D, the ATV, the kayak, The flying fox, archery, paint-ball and drove the go-kart and also walked through the Scream Park. Oh, and not to forget the Tomahawk and Pirate's Revenge ride which undeniably FUN!
    Finally!

  4. This year marked my first YOLO trip with my twin sister! We went to Alor Setar (it's our first trip, what do you expect?!). Traveled around the city on foot from Pasar Siti Khadijah to the Royal Museum and to the famous Menara Alor Star. What makes this trip more memorable and special for me is the fact that this is the first time I ever flown on a plane! That's a first! hahaha

  5. One of the best things happened to me in 2013 is that i got to tried whole lot of delicious food! Starting with Seoul Garden and Dubu-Dubu, i got to taste Korean food which make me drool when i watched K-dramas/shows. So far, i like Korean BBQ and Korean Chili paste which is just amazing! Not to mention the spicy rice cake and also their bibimbap. The one i had Johor Premium Outlet is so delish. From Korea, we move to Japan. Aside from the delicious takoyaki, i began to have dibs on okonomiyaki. This so called Japanese pizza is actually a bigger version of takoyaki, at least that's what i think. hahaha

  6. Met Izzah for the very first time! Argh!!! It's like a dream come true!! I went to the final ceramah for the 13thGE in Kerinchi and there, I met Anwar Ibrahim too. Got the chance to shake hand with Izzah! hahaha
She was really close but my 2.0mp camera is just suck.

  7. Okay, followed by a politician on Twitter which is really cool after that someone unfollowed me. >.<
  8. And i met Kee Thuan Chye for the very first time and included in his article published in Malaysian Digest, entitled Is It Part of Our Culture? You can check the article here ---> HERE

  9. I went on hiking for the first time in Perak and i immediately fell in love with it! I might go on another hiking in 2014, wait for it!

  10. In 2013, fortunately, i joined the Black 505 rally set in Kelana Jaya Stadium. There's so many people there that my friend had to park his car 5km away from the stadium and the 3 of us have to walked with others participants to the stadium! It is tiring but i
    really enjoy it!
  11. A few politicians replied to my tweet on Twitter.

  12. Joined a couple of marathon event as a volunteer such as NTV7's Feel Good Run and World Kidney Day event, to name a few.

Giving out drinks to the runners!
  13. Went to KLPAC to watch Romeo and Juliet, a high school version acted by Malaysian young actors. And almost squeal when they really kiss >.<
A quick shoot before the guard chased us away!

  14. Participated in the first IPIK's Mater Chef contest and got lucky when our group is the second runner up!
    Okaylah for a first timer.

  15. Published my own children's book.
  16. Bought a new bicycle which i named Orangey, obviously for its colour.

  17. Learnt how to build a wooden plane and got really excited when i succeed in making one!

    Come with me, Airplane, Love!

  18. Went to Felda Residence Hot Spring in Sg Klah, Perak. Tried the hot spring for the first time!
It was raining heavily before this.

  19. Went to ICT with my family.

  20. And lastly, got a new niece, Hanan!
Well, there you have it. A recap of my 2013. What about yours?

It's Eid Mubarak!

SELAMAT HARI RAYA, everyone!

Yes, Hari Raya is here already and it is about time i update this blog although no one is reading it...

Anyway, i'm writing this for my my own pleasure. I'm not writing to please anyone else.

Back to the topic, Raya is here and for the first time in my life, i did not go to any house to beraya.

i just stayed home and served all the guests...

During a week stay at my kampung in Batu Kikir, I never went out for beraya.

Even my mom just stayed at home because she is worked up with all the cooking.

And this year raya is slightly different because not everyone is being a pain in the ass.

This is because i got my own room instead of being pushed around by the elderly.

So that is a YAY!

Moreover, i got to play a lot and a lot of firecrackers this raya!

Well, that just it...

And, RIP diet. I am fat like a pig again after a week of non stop eating.

HAPPY BRITHDAY, FATHIN HASNOL!

CLAP CLAP CLAP!

Happy Birthday to Fathin Hasnol aka Fey!!
Today is her 20th birthday!! Selamat Hari Jadi!

Despite having some conflict a couple of hours before her birthday, I still want to say that i love you, fey! Really! We have been friends for 7 years now... And 7 tahun tu bukanlah masa yang pendek... Thanks for having me as your friend...
And guess what, Fathin, I discovered something!

Hmmm... i am imagining the three of us, gossiping about our husbands and taking care of our babies together! Insya-Allah, kalau umur panjang, apa salahnya? Hihihi!

And once again, sorry Fathin atas kekasaran bahasa dan segalanya.
Selamat Hari Jadi, sahabatku!

Got A New Ride!

Last week, I decided to buy myself a new bicycle. The idea just popped out one afternoon and next thing I knew, I already purchased a bicycle. *Sigh. There goes my money.

Hi, my name is Orangey!
I regret a bit the decision to buy Orangey because I am supposed to save for my South Korea trip. Plus, rumour has it that SNSD is coming to Malaysia!! So, I need to save as much as I can!

Almost forgot, my friends and I are planning to hit Sunway Lagoon on the 22nd of June since we got 20% off discount from a lucky draw at MPH. So need more money! Gaaah! Bungee Jump + entrance fee = Approx. RM 200!!

Anyway, back to the title. I have bought Orangey. Therefore, I need to use him for my benefits! I will definitely use him to cut off some weight and also to explore Seremban. For now, only Seremban is in the list since I havent decide whether to bring Orangey back to my campus or not and also because I enjoy walking to my classes.

Okay, that is it for today. I still have some drafts for other posts though...
Let’s just see if I manage to finish them up in time..

New Class!

What an exciting way to start the new sem of 2013! TESL Cohort 3 had been divided into 4 classes now! Way to go! I dont care much about the new class but the lecturers could at least mix around all the students instead of extracting 4-5 students from the old classes to create a new one... Then it will be exciting.. aish...
Anyway, I am in the new class which is G2.10... Greetings new classmates! am seriously looking forward of the new mentors and also my new classmates... See you guys soon!

13GE: thoughts and opinions...

Tidur tak lena, feeling nauseous, unconscious of the surrounding, sorrowfulness, devastated but it is not like I can do anything about it.

The 13th General Election was held on the 5th of May 2013 and Malaysians have witnessed again how Barisan Nasional continued their 57 years legacy. However, Pakatan Rakyat has succeeded in denying 2/3 majority of the parliamentary seats for Barisan by winning 89 out of 222 seats. If we put aside Sabah and Sarawak, in Semenanjung alone, Pakatan has won 81 seats whereas Barisan has won 82 seats. The rest of the seats for both sides are from Sabah and Sarawak.

Seeing this number somehow made me realised that Malaysians of Semenanjung are far more exposed to the truth and to the things happening. Obviously, thanks to the Internet, the most prominent medium of campaign used by Pakatan aside from their ceramah. Those in Sabah and Sarawak, have not been exposed to the issues that affected the voters in Semenanjung. Those in Sabah and Sarawak are far more concern about the stability and the peacefulness rather than the high price of oil and cars because most of them do not own a car.

Besides that, the Election Commission is also stained by the indelible ink issue, dubious voters, foreigner voters and also the lost of ballot boxes. I do not want to touch on the issue of "BLACK OUT" since there are too many contradicting opinions that they are making me really-really confuse. So, I am taking a safe step and decision to not write about it in this post. The EC must come with a very reasonable answer to each issue raised because these issues must not taken lightly. For example, the issue of indelible ink. As much as RM 5 million is spent to buy the indelible ink, yet the ink is not permanent. For such a big sum of money spent, this kind of problem should not even occur in the first place. It is either the EC is deceived by the supplier or there are some kind of problems that we do not know in the process of purchasing the ink. We, the RAKYAT, just want the truth. Nothing else.

Barisan may have win the election but they have lost a lot of seats and this should be a wake up call for them to work harder. They should first clean the whole party from corruption. Second, they should start thinking a way to enhance the economical issue. After that, Barisan should stop controlling all the media. This will only make Malaysians more annoyed of them. Next, stop playing the racism sentiment. What is 1Malaysia if you keep on saying racist issue? Barisan should make a holistic change to ensure they can win the votes of 2.5 million young voters for the 14th General Election.

As for Pakatan, you may lost but you have increased the number seats won. That is a huge achievement too. For now, you need to do post mortem on the candidates that have lost. Is the problem lies within the candidate? Or the problem is caused by the EC? or the problem is because there are not enough campaign? Pakatan has to dissect the problems and resolve them smartly.

Finally, congratulation to Barisan for winning, hoping BN will be better in order to ensure they will win the votes of Malaysians again. As for Pakatan, though you lost, you have become a much better, united coalition. Increase in parliaments seats as well as state seats have shown the positive acceptance by the public. You maybe win in 14GE, who knows, right?

hahaha. that is it, my 2 cents on the 13th General Election.. Feel free to comment!

p/s: I hate Plastic surgery.

A Venturesome Journey to Lembah Pantai

Poster for the last campaign
4th of May marked the date I went to a political ceramah on my own. No one was there to accompany me. My best friend bailed out last minute saying that her parents do not allow her to go. So, I made up my mind and I decided that I should just go there on my own.

Map from Bangsar LRT Station to PPR Kerinchi

First thing that I had to do was to Google the venue. Based on Izzah's Facebook status, there are two venues for the ceramah as the first venue which is Padang Bola Sepak, PPR Kerinchi was taken by UMNO Lembah Pantai although PKR had the permit to use that place. Thus, they last minute change it to a field near SMK Sri Pantai.

So, around 230 pm, it was somehow confirmed that the venue will be at a field behind SMK Sri Pantai. According to the Google Map, I had to get off at University LRT Station and walk for about 10 minutes to the venue. I said to myself, this is the time for you to explore on your own! I mean, you are going to a place based on a map! YOU ACTUALLY READING A MAP! Get it? It was like a great achievement of the day. Thinking that it will be fun and venturesome, I packed my stuffs and set off from the college at 5.

I arrived at Universiti LRT Station around 5:30 pm. I was a bit hesitated and scared at the same time since I am not familiar with the surrounding. It was my first time being there in Kerinchi. I was confused on which street I should walk along since there are so many conjunctions and cars. I took out my phone and forced myself to read the map. According to the map, I have to cross Jalan Kerinchi and walk along Lorong Kerinchi Kiri 2 to Lorong Kerinchi Kiri 1 which will lead to Jalan Kerinchi Kiri, where the school is.

Along the walk, there are so many banners and flags of BN and I passed by PPR Kerinchi, the venue which UMNO Lembah Pantai had set up their tent illegally. Then, i came about SMK Sri Pantai sign board and happy that I am nearing the ceramah site.

This is crazy but I am the only girl, alone, walking along the side with so many male volunteers of PKR, handing out Izzah's posters. I ought to have one but am afraid to bring it back, in case anything happened. I just walk along the road until I found the school BUT it seems that they have changed the venue again. I dont know where but I just walk along, following all the expensive cars with PR flags on them.

Walking alone in the middle of nowhere would probably make you feel sort of insecure and scared yet seeing all the people who are walking towards the ceramah site too, is making me feel safe. A lot of Chinese and Indians were walking too, not to mention the Malays.

After about 15 minutes of walking, I arrived at Bangsar South. Haha. I almost curse because Bangsar South  is so damn near to Kerinchi LRT Station! You just need to walk for 5 minutes across the Federal Highway through the Sky Bridge! @#$%^&* Anyway, it was 6:15 pm and the ceramah has not started. So many people came that day and I almost shed tears seeing Indian reading Harakah, Chinese wearing PAS flag. Subhan-Allah, this is the real perpaduan that we want! We support each other despite of the religions and despite of the races.

It was 7:54 pm according to my watch when Nurul Izzah Anwar arrived. OMG~ Mental breaks down, seeing the Puteri Reformasi for the first time. She is so beautiful when you see her with you own eyes! I was speechless the whole time when she went to the side of the stage where I was. About to shake her hand but she has turned away to the other side of the stage, greeting them. I was disappointed and devastated. What if  I do not have the chance to be that close to her again? She was just 2m or 3m away yet I lost the chance. SCREW ME...

Izzah's talk was very inspirational and FUN... haha.. the sarcastic statements she made had everyone shouts in unison, agreeing to them. Her stage control is good too. She does not focus only to the listeners at the front but at the both sides too. After about 20 - 30 minutes of Izzah's talk, she suddenly stopped and handed the mic to Fahmi Fadzil who is Izzah's new assistant. LOL. I just knew about it few minutes ago.

Then after a few minutes, Anwar Ibrahim made his appearance! He was in a hurry since he had to get BACK to Penang because he still have a couple of ceramah left at Permatang Pauh. OMG, how tiresome that can be? I mean, travelling from another state to another in one night... Damn... I bet Najib never experiences this since he got all the media: Internet, Radio and Tele on his own to campaign all day long. What a shame...

This is how close I am from her...

Alas, the event ended around 9 which is actually pretty early for me and it is good since I can go back before the curfew. However, before i go back, I have promised to myself to shake Nurul Izzah's hand. It is once in a life time chance!

I dont want to bore you guys with my attempts to shake her hand,
just want you guys to know that I
succeed. Mwahahaha!!

p/s: Sorry for any grammar errors... too lazy to check... headache caused by the black out.

5 Mei 2013, KEKAL atau UBAH?

Within a day time, we will be having our 13th General Election. Oh yes, the time i believed,

each and everyone of us are waiting for since the last GE which has happened in 2008. The

12th GE has shown a big change when the new combination of PAS, PKR and DAP which is

known as Pakatan Rakyat, has denied the 2/3 majority of parliamentary seats for Barisan

Nasional. At that time, Pakatan Rakyat has won 82 parliament seats out of 222. It is actually a

good sign of the Malaysians' matured perspectives of politics. Malaysians are not blind any

more. They now know what is good and what is bad. Sometimes, we need to have some

changes in the politics landscape because these changes can be a catalyst for the parties in

charge to always be on alert of the rakyat's needs. If not, abuse of power will occur. I am not

siding towards any political parties, now. I am not even eligible to cast a vote as I am only 20

this year. However, it does not mean that i do not have a say in the nation political issues. As a

Malaysian, I am obliged to know and to have concern over the nation's politics. It depends on

the politics on how the nation will run. Whether it will run smoothly or badly, it all depends on the

winning party. Without a good and transparent politics, a nation can be filled with corruptions,

abuse of power and a whole lot more. Which is why, all you voters really need to think before

you cast your vote. One vote can make a huge different. Your vote will determine the future of

Malaysia. Whether you want to KEKAL or to UBAH it, it is up to you. One thing for sure,

sometimes changing is good.

EDU: Impacts of Islamic, Eastern and Western Philosophy on Malaysia Eduction System.

This is my first assignment for Philosophy.... the task is to write the impacts of  Islamic, Eastern and Western Philosophy on Malaysia Eduction System.

      INTRODUCTION

“Plants are shaped by cultivation and men by education.  ... We are born weak, we need strength; we are born totally unprovoked, we need aid; we are born stupid, we need judgement. Everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are grown is given us by education.” (Jean Jacques Rousseau, Emile)
From the quote above, it is proven how important education is to human being. Without education, human will be uncivilised and will be left out. Education is more than just writing, reading and arithmetic. Often people being sceptical that education is something bored, something that is factual which need the learner to be serious all the time. I quote Charles M. Schulz, “Try not to have a good time...this is supposed to be educational.” This is among the generalisations made on education. People assumed that by doing something educational, they will not have a good time which is obviously wrong.
“When you know better you do better.” (Maya Angelou)
From what I understand through Maya Angelou words is that, you will do better when you know better. The terms “know better” here can be understand as getting enough education. When an individual has enough education and he is educated well, he will do better in life. It is a basic rule of life that you will be happy when you do better in life. Therefore, the idea of not having a good time when you are studying is totally untrue.
Education is one of those important elements that a country can make in its people and its future. Education is important in reducing poverty and inequality among the people as it helps them to provide better life for their children and of course, for themselves. Besides that, education also helps people to work better and it can create a sustainable economic growth now and in the future. Education also helps to prevent the spread of pandemic diseases such as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) or Human Influenza (flu), reducing the mortality of mothers and children and also help improving their health. In addition, education also helps in encouraging transparency, good governance, stability and helps in fighting corruption. Thus, these are all the good impacts the education has on a country.
The government of Malaysia begins to pay high attention on the matter or education because of all these reasons. Malaysia has focus on education since the independent time. Many reports have been made over the years to enhance the education system. Starting from the Barnes Report in 1951, the Barnes committee was set up to study and improve the education system for the Malays. Unfortunately, this report failed to bring about an improvement to the Malay schools without having to revamp the whole education system. This is because the Chinese and the Indians are being told to gradually give up their vernacular schools and to send their children to Malay schools where only Malay language is used as the medium of instruction. This obviously will rip off their mother tongue skill from their children.
Then, Fenn-Wu Report comes in 1952. It is a report that focuses on retaining the Chinese language as the medium of instruction in Chinese schools. This report is a failure too because it only focuses on the benefits of the Chinese.
Last but not least, the Razak Report which has established in 1956. This report focuses on making the Malay language as the national language and the main medium of instruction in schools and all schools must use the common syllabus. Thus, this is the start of the complete education system for Malaysia since the Independent Day.
From Razak Report, Education Act 1996 was introduced. It is to strengthen the aims of Razak Report on the education system of Malaysia. The two main aims of the Education Act 1996 are to further consolidate the national education system for the young generation in accordance with the country’s aspirations of making a centre of excellence for education. Next, is to outline the legislation related to education.
Due to the aspirations of the different ethnic groups in our country and to cope with the educational challenges of the 21st century, the National Philosophy of education is introduced.

2.0 CONCEPT OF NATIONAL PHILOSOPHY of EDUCATION (NPE) & PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHER EDUCATION (PTE).
“Philosophy of education” is made up from two basic terms, which is philosophy and education. Philosophy is characterized as much by how it examines these questions as by the questions themselves. The answers are not concrete and cannot be determined through experiments. This does not mean, though, that philosophy is just opinion. Like natural scientists, philosophers form hypotheses that must be validated by fact, reason and logic. Therefore, philosophy is serves as an outline for living, as it addresses basic issues which determine the direction and courses we taken in our lives.
Next is the concept of education. The word “education” is originated from the Latin word, e-ducere which means “to lead out”. Education is a process of teaching, training and learning, especially in schools or colleges, to improve knowledge and develop skills. This definition is also quite similar to the famous John Dewey. According to Dewey, “Education is a process to elevate man’s status. School is seen as a special environment which is the same as the social environment.  It can be understand here that education is a process of learning that will lift up one’s status in the social cycle.
Therefore, the term “philosophy of education” can be defined as a list of idea on the learning process to produce a good quality of human being. A good quality human being here can be interpreted as a fully functioning adult that can serve the nation. Good human qualities also consist of being honest, creative, courteous, motivating, spiritual, flourishing and etc. It is from education that only a great person can be produced. One person in a society can make a huge difference. Eventually he will affect the whole nation in a good way with his bright and splendid ideas.
This can be supported by Dr. Yusuf al-Qardawi’s speech in 1980 which saying, “Education encompasses our whole being – physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. Its purpose is to prepare to face the world which is continually faced with good and bad, sweetness and bitterness.” It is evidenced from this quote here that education is the main tool to prepare an individual with all the challenges on the world and this concept is applied in the NPE.
The goals of NPE are to produce a balanced and harmonious individual intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically knowledgeable, honourable, responsible, competent and able to contribute to a harmonious family, community and country. So, to ensure these goals are achieved, teachers are given the responsibility to teach and to nurture the pupils from the start. Like the old saying, “it is better to bend the willow when it is young”, the pupils too, should be educated at a very young age that is when they are in the primary schools.
The cabinet has come with philosophy of teacher education (PTE), to help the realisation of NPE. PTE outlines the kind of teachers aspired by Malaysia. The kind of teachers wanted to work NPE out are  teachers with good personal well-being, progressive and scientifically oriented, ready to uphold the nation’s aspirations and preserve her cultural heritage, promises individual development and maintains a united, democratic, progressive and disciplined society.
Therefore, to further strengthen the NPE, the cabinet has absorbed some elements of the Islamic, Eastern and Western philosophy into the nation’s philosophy. Hence, this action has created a huge impact on our education system.

3.0 IMPACT OF ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION (IPE) ON MALAYSIA EDUCATION SYSTEM
Education is taken rather serious in Islam. Past Muslim rulers had emphasised on education because they knew how significant education is to a person. The noble prophet, Muhammad, peace be upon him, is a great educator himself. He teaches everything about Islam anywhere possible such as in the masjid, madrasah and even in the open place like markets. The objectives of Muslim education were achievement of worldly prosperity and social distinction. The main aim of education is ‘to understand the relation of man with God as revealed in the Holy Quran’.
According to Al-Syaibani (1979), Philosophy of Islamic Education aims to provide Muslims with experience and enough knowledge that he knew himself and his duties and responsibilities, knew how to carry out the responsibility as a servant and ruler to become a good human being. Based on this excerpt, the meaning is somewhat similar to the goals of NPE that is to produce a knowledgeable person. Thus the impact of IPE on the education system is the formulation of Kemahiran Bersatu Sekolah Rendah (KBSR) to Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah (KSSR).
The Islamic Philosophy of Education emphasised that education unifies all knowledge and that education is grounded in the Quran. Education plays an important role in creating a balance for the physical, intellectual and spiritual potentials of the individual. These potentials are needed in order to produce a first-class individual. Among the potentials needed are respectful, responsible, strong willed, trustworthy and considerate. These potentials need to be tutored to the pupils starting from the early stage that is from Standard 1 and that is why these potentials are teach in the new KSSR. The KSSR is emphasising on the students rather than the KBSR that focused more on the teachers. There are 4 based for the KSSR which are integrated approaching, development of an individual as a whole, equal quality and opportunity for all students and last but not least, lifelong learning. These bases resembled the Islamic Philosophy of Education, which aiming to achieve a balance level of life in all aspects.
The KSSR has touched on 6 types of changes which are the ingenious of one self, humanity, morality, communication, science and technology and last but not least the development of the physical. I will explain 3 of the changes that are ingeniousity, humanity and morality. A student needs to be equipped with good morale and characters so that they can be a full charismatic person once they finished their study. Same with IPE, Muslims are advocated to be a charismatic Muslim so that they can attract others to revert back to Islam. One of Islam basic goals is to spread Islam all over the world. Next, the KSSR has aimed to elevate the students’ knowledge on humanity. Students will be taught how to socialise among their peers, among their family and in the public. There are differences on how one should communicate in a society and among their peers. This also resembles IPE. Muslims are taught to develop such qualities of a good man which are universally accepted by the societies which have faith in religion. To be universally accepted, a Muslim has to master the social skills which varied according to the surrounding. Last but not least, the KSSR also focus on implementing the appreciation of religion in every student. In the Islamic Philosophy of Education, one of the objectives is to produce man who has faith as well as knowledge in spiritual development. Those who have strong faith in a religion will tend to do better in their life and this is one of the objectives of KSSR.
In conclusion, the Islamic Philosophy of Education has impacted on the nation’s education system in the sense of the reformation of the KBSR or Kemahiran Bersatu Sekolah Rendah to KSSR or Kokurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah by becoming more student centred, more developed and more prĂ©cised in achieving its goal.

4.0 IMPACT OF EASTERN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION (EPE) ON MALAYSIA EDUCATION SYSTEM
The Eastern Philosophy of Education is originated from China and India. This philosophy focused more on the development of intellectual and spiritual. This can be seen in the principles of the Eastern Philosophy of Education. However, this type of philosophy does not focus on the physical aspect which is a vital aspect too. Two famous figures of this philosophy are Confucius (551-479 SM) and Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941).
According to Confucius in terms of his concept of education, education is available for all regardless of one’s socio-economic status or social position in a community. The main goal of his view is to produce individuals who are capable with high morals, obedience and patriotic. Through this philosophy, education can instil proper behaviour to the students.
Meanwhile, Rabindranath Tagore's philosophy of education is that education is a process that provides every individual a chance to make a living for their future. The educational goal is to produce a comprehensive individual through interaction and integration with the environment. He further said that education is a process designed to produce perfect human minded and able to reach all areas of life and ready to serve the community and the nation.
The impact that the Eastern Philosophy of Education is to produce students that are competent, have good characters and well-disciplined. These elements resembled one of the National Philosophy of Education goals that are to produce a harmony and well-balanced individual. For example, the nation expected well-behaved and worthwhile students from the education system. According to Confucius, education for all means education that is designed for all Malaysians, including those with disabilities, regardless of race and religion.

The impact that the Eastern Philosophy of Education has upon Malaysia education system is that the implementation of Memartabatkan Bahasa Melayu Memperkukuh Bahasa Inggeris (MBMMBI) instead of the Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik Dalam Bahasa Inggeris (PPSMI). This is because, based on the Eastern Philosophy of Education, it is more vita; to produce individuals who serve and love the country. The main goal of this implementation is to strengthen English language proficiency among students because it is one of the national languages and tp reinforce the English language as a tool of communication. The importance of English is that it is the language of unity among the races, the main communication language and the language of knowledge towards building this nation to achieve the goal of 1 Malaysia. This is in line with the Eastern Philosophy of Education which to create a society that love the country through the usage of national language of Malaysia.
Therefore, it can be associated with one of the elements in the National Education Philosophy to produce students who are able to contribute to the harmony and prosperity of the family, society and the country, also prepared and responsible. The basic mean of the formation of the philosophy is to create people who were loyal to the country. This is because; the concept of loyalty from the practice of Eastern Philosophy of Education has been applied in the formation of the nation education system.

5.0 IMPACTS OF WESTERN PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION ON MALAYSIA EDUCATION SYSTEM
Western Philosophy of Education is divided into two types, namely traditional philosophy and modern philosophy. Examples for modern western philosophy are pragmatism, progressivisms, existentialism and reconstructivisme. Meanwhile, examples for traditional western philosophy are idealism, realism, perenialisme and essentialism. Only a few of these is used and they are essentialism and reconstructivisme.
In the 1930s, the philosophy of essentialism is a systematic philosophical movement in education. The main concept of this philosophy is to focus on the basic things only which are what you need to know as individuals, to be more advanced. The basic things in turn may change from time to time, being flexible, practical and pragmatic. For the philosophers, knowledge and key skills should be taught to our pupils. Therefore, the main educational goal for this philosophy is the teaching of factual information that should be learned, practiced and maintained by our pupils. The types of curriculum that will help in the realisation of the above goals are the implementation of the basic skills such as reading, calculating and writing (3M).
Meanwhile, the compulsory subjects that should be taught are science and history. The teacher's role in this philosophy is the dependable teacher. Appropriate teaching methods are used to approach the students. Student role was only to study hard and concentrate on their efforts in learning. Furthermore, the members of essentialism suggest that societal values such as social values, cultural and political should be taught throughout the school by teachers who are qualified and skilled.
The impact of this philosophy on the education system is the reformation of the National Philosophy of Education. This related to the element of education that education is an ongoing effort to pupils ranging from the easy level to the difficult level. This means students can acquire knowledge, new skills and values continuously from early childhood to the end. Lifelong learning can also help individuals to adapt to various changes.
Next, based on the educational philosophy of essentialism, we can also produce individuals who are intellectually balanced. The curriculum has been introduced in the USSR is to learn the basic skills in the early learning of students as reading, writing, calculating and interpreting (4M). In addition, the application of the values in each subject and the subjects were divided into two types of which are the core and the elective.
As for the teacher’s roles, the teacher is a role model to the students and is able to control the classroom that teaching and learning activities work out smoothly. This is in line with the Philosophy of Teacher Education, which to produce more teachers and ensure that they are dependable individuals. In terms of the role of students, the students have to study hard to succeed in their studies. This is in line with the National Education Philosophy to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable, competent and responsible.
The second impact that the Western Education of Philosophy has upon Malaysia education system is the implementation of the Literacy and Numeracy Screening, LINUS. LINUS is a recovery program that is designed to enable students to acquire basic literacy and numeracy skills while they are in the primary schools level starting with Year One, Year Two and Year Three. This means every student must be able to master basic literacy and numeracy during the three years they were in primary schools. Therefore, LINUS helps students who have 4M problems which are reading, writing, mathematics and reasoning. This is in line with the concept of essentialism philosophy of education that emphasizes the basic things in an individual's learning that should be more advanced.
Therefore, these are the impacts that the Western Philosophy of Education had upon our country education system. This philosophy emphasises on the mastering of basic skills and they are essentials for everyone because in anything you do, you need to know how to read, write and doing the arithmetic.

7.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, we can see that the national education policy is a document containing a statement of policy and implementation strategies to be used as guidelines for educators to carry out the teaching and learning environment in the classroom. The National Philosophy of Education has been established with respect to the branches of philosophy such as metaphysics, epistemology, axiology, and logic and other elements contained in it. This is because the impacts of Islamic, Eastern and Western Philosophy of Education have cause changes in the development of philosophy of education in Malaysia. Philosophy of Education also has implications on the nation’s education system and the philosophy has been designed to be a guide for the realization of Vision 2020. Thus, the National Philosophy of Education also has impacted the education system to produce high quality teachers.
